Process Book Assignment

PROCESS BOOK
SEMESTER LONG ASSIGNMENT

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward—you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” —Steve Jobs

A process book is a record of the process of graphic design. Most of your creative process for this class and beyond will happen outside of what you do on the computer. Think of your process book as a journal-like record of your ideas, projects, process, musings, inspirations and the like for this semester. Your task is to keep a process book for the entire semester, where you are to include, at the very least, the following:

  • Directed explorations in the form of assigned exercises
  • Course material and notes
  • All research
  • All concept sketches and thumbnails
  • The visual development of each project (from research to final piece—you should be able to show this book to someone not in this class and know that they will be able to follow the process of each of your projects)
  • Anything else that you feel is important to your studies

We will look at these books quite often in class so, be sure to get one early and get started using it. Bring it to every class meeting. It will be graded at the end of the semester, so be sure that you consider craft as you progress. Your grade will be determined by the depth of your explorations, the scope of your content and level of your craft.

A FEW TIPS

Be sure to include plenty of visual information. If you are asked to look at a website and respond to it, then be sure to include images of items that you address in your writing and sketches. This will allow you to recall what you were thinking about and looking at when you revisit your process book in the future.

Keep it in chronological order so that you can follow your thought process in a linear way as the semester progresses.
